Meeting The Legend
A few people in our lives have an immense impact: they are icons.
A young man studied with an old carpenter for many years. At the end of his apprenticeship, the master kissed the young man on both cheeks, as they do in the old country, and said to him: “I have not taught you my craft; you are my legacy.” The man thought of his teacher every day of his working life.
After a time, it can become difficult to distinguish the perception from the reality.
A young woman was separated from her father at birth. When she met him, many years later, a lifetime of expectations, musings and thoughts flashed through her mind. In the same instant that he was no longer who she thought he was, she changed profoundly and irrevocably.
That part of us that exists because of our perception of the icon, can be shattered by new information that violates our previous expectations.
